Small Group Counseling Schedule and Group Topic Summaries
1st Quarter(starts at the end of
September)
1. Good Citizen’s Group (All 4 grade levels): This group reminds students all of the ways to be a good citizen and the importance of making positive choices throughout their day. They get to practice all of the skills they learn throughout group and help other students be good citizens as well throughout Cumberland. The group teaches students different ways to be a good student in the classroom, anger management skills in different situations, the importance of being honest, respecting others personal space, not teasing others, along with other ways to be a good citizen.
2. Academic Skill Building Group (2nd and 3rd grade): This group is great for students that are struggling academically in the classroom. It teaches students different academic skills that are useful in the classroom. During the group, students set an academic goal to work on, learn different study and test-taking skills, learn how to make better decisions in the classroom, along with other areas that will help improve their overall success in the classroom.
2nd Quarter
1. Friendship Skill Building Group (K, 1st, and 2nd grade): This group helps students that are having a difficult time building friendships with other peers or that are struggling to get along with others.
2. Stay Focused Group (1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade): This group helps students that have a difficult time staying on task and focused in the classroom setting.
3rd Quarter

4th Quarter:
1. Dealing with a Divorce in the Family Group (1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders): This group is for students whose parents have or are currently going through a divorce. It is an excellent support group for students and they learn a lot from one another.
2. Anger Management Group (2nd and 3rd graders): This group helps students manage their anger and frustrations in a positive way by learning positive coping skills in several different types of situations. It is an excellent group that helps students learn that they are responsible for their own actions and have control over their choices.

The counseling groups are typically 8 group meetings that last approximately 25-30 minutes and take place during lunch and/or recess as much as possible. The groups are a great opportunity for students based on their need in different areas.
